Allstar is a VOIP communications system which has of late become very popular amongst the radio amateur community and rightly so. Using a simple handheld radio tuned to your node you will be able to have QSOs with stations from all over the world, and the audio quality is outstanding.

But how do you get started with your own node? Commercially available Allstar nodes are starting to be becoming available but can be quite expensive, some amateurs construct complete ready to use turnkey Allstar systems and offer them for sale. Others like myself enjoy the challenge of building and setting up their own nodes, and I can tell you there is really no reason why the average radio amateur cannot do this by themselves.

As a complete beginner putting together my first Allstar node and having it function to my satisfaction took me some time, many weeks in fact, not because the construction was difficult, in truth it is actually not that hard, but because the necessary information seems to be fragmented all over the internet on different sites. No one seems to have put together a simple, logical, easy to follow set of ABC type instructions designed for those with zero previous knowledge and very limited constructional abilities as I was when I started out.
